Transportation cargo handling machinery centered on overhead traveling cranes

SANKO MACHINERY was established as a cooperation factory of Sumitomo Heavy Industries Ltd. in 1968. It was launched from the machining department, but in 1969 it began operations in plate working, finishing and assembly. The current factory was built in 1976, and in 1994 the finishing, assembly and painting factory was built in order to promote the expansion of production. In 2011 it introduced a 30 t overhead traveling crane, creating a setup that can respond to the production of large iron structures.

The company's core business, is the manufacture of transport cargo handling equipment centered around overhead traveling cranes. The company’s strength lies in its large scale equipment able to handle everything from plate working, to machining, painting, finishing, assembling and commissioning, and its advanced technology, backed by many years of experience.


The company is skilled in large-scale overhead traveling cranes, the maximum possible production length is 48m, with weighting capacity of 60 t. To complete the various steps, it takes many days to manufacture. One mistake in this production process can lead to delivery delays and material cost increases, which can lead to losing the trust of customers. To prevent these problems, the company places importance on "working while thinking that the next step is the customer" (President Yukio Ono), and a strict check system for thorough quality control is in place for each process. Thus, the idea that customer satisfaction is achieved through continuous responsible work at each step, is shown by the company's motto "making things in the spirit of harmony".


The company's manufacturing involves much work that requires many years of experience. Overhead traveling cranes, usually place a camber above the parabola, and are designed so that the crane stays horizontal when lifting an object due to this weight. The camber will vary by the weight of the crane itself and the maximum lifting capacity. In addition, for welding, the degree of distortion differs depending on the location and the order of welding. Such design and work procedures utilize the know-how from manufacturing a large number of cranes.

Cranes for cargo handling employ a technique called "roll-on roll-off method" whereby the assembled crane is placed on the ship and transported to the port of delivery. The product is utilized at the port, can be transported by sea to the location, and can be used immediately since it is pre-assembled. This method allows shorter delivery times and lower costs compared to land transport, and it can be said that the method makes use of the regional characteristics of Niihama City which is suitable for sea transport.


In future, with the idea that "Although the scope of responsibility increases, we can do what we want" we plan to strengthen our design capability by increasing design department staff. If we can improve our design capabilities, we will be able to make better proposals to customers and this "will lead to increasing customer satisfaction.".
